The Vadakkunnathan temple (a Siva temple in the ancient Kerala architectural style) is the festival's epicentre. Thrissur is home to Kerala Kalamandalam (the state's premier institution for Kathakali, Mohiniyattam, Koodiyattam, and Theyyam — a UNESCO-recognised arts hub) and the Kerala Sahitya Akademi.
